Fast fashion and it’s worst offender

We’ve all heard the phrase “there is no ethical consumption under capitalism”. While this is a pretty accurate statement, there is such thing as mindful consumption under capitalism. The phrase was originally meant to take the blame off of the consumers and onto the corporations that mass-produce and are a big offender of carbon emissions. However people often use the aforementioned phrase to excuse their own overconsumption. One of the worst cases is that of Shein. Shein offers low prices and adds anywhere between 2,000-6,000 products to their website daily. It is by far the most popular, widely shopped at fast-fashion brand of Generation Z.

This overproduction has allowed people who have the means to buy large amounts of clothing and accessories that they will wear for a short period of time while they are trendy. Then they can donate them and start over with another batch of clothing. This is rampant among influencers, who often create haul videos on Tiktok or Youtube showcasing hundreds of dollars worth of Shein merchandise. Shein exponentially surpasses over fast fashion brands in terms of people who shop there and the amount of products they sell. Their annual revenue has had an exponentially increase every year since 2016.
