Fashion’s most diverse brands

In the 21st century there has been a growing concern with diverse representation across all forms of media, but especially in marketing. Anything from advertising to the runway, for a long time there has been a cookie cutter precedent in everything around us. Young, tall, thin, white, able-bodied, symmetrical face, sharp jaw, small nose. These standards have stuck around for a long time, and it’s had an impact on accessibility to clothing for people who don’t meet sizing standards. However we’ve slowly but surely seen some change in the industry over the last few years. An example of a brand that is known for size diversity is Savage X Fenty, Rihanna’s lingerie brand that offers a wide range of sizes and features models of a variety of body types and sizes.

Some brands have gone above and beyond when it comes to inclusion and diversity. Fashion Brand Company is a women-owned clothing brand that sells quirky styles. They offer sizes XXS-5X, sometimes 6X, and even their one-of-a-kind pieces come in different sizes. Each and every listing features models of different sizes and ethnicities. They are gender inclusive, selling unisex styles and not marketing products specifically as womenswear. They’ve even collaborated with well known drag queen Trixie Mattel, establishing their support of queer culture.

One of the best examples I’ve ever seen of genuine inclusivity of a fashion brand has to go to Selkie. Their NYFW Spring 2024 show did an excellent job showcasing not only ethnically diverse and body inclusive models, but also older models and disabled models. People have noted that Selkie has done a great job at creating clothes that look great on anyone, and showcasing that. They are also creating opportunities for new models, as many of them had their runway debut in that show.
